Medicare, explained in plain language and without selling you anything
Guidance to understand your coverage alternatives and make an informed decision. Advice about specific plans is provided through authorized personnel where applicable.
What it is
Medicare is the federal health coverage program available mainly to people from age 65, and also to some younger people with certain conditions.
It is divided into parts, and each one covers different things. Understanding that division is what lets you compare alternatives with judgment instead of signing the first thing you are offered.
It is also worth distinguishing between an independent counselor and an insurance agent or broker: their roles and their options are different.
The parts of Medicare
Original Medicare
- Part A: hospital coverage
- Part B: basic medical coverage
Alternatives and supplements
- Part C (Medicare Advantage): plans from approved private insurers
- Part D: prescription drug coverage
- Medigap (Medicare Supplement): supplemental coverage for costs not covered
Who it is usually useful for
- People approaching 65 who do not know where to start.
- Families who get calls and plan offers and cannot compare them.
- People who already have coverage but do not understand what it covers.
